Is Yellow the Color of 2025?

Here we are, millennial grays are now a thing of the past. If you’ve been following trends for the past couple years, you would have noticed that color is back and making a statement. It started with muted, earth-toned colors— think of soft greens, charcoal grays, and undersaturated browns. We are now stepping into a new territory: saturated colors. Hues of red made its way through 2024, but now are we seeing the unexpected. Yellow is a bold, bold color. Everyone can pretty much agree that it reminds them of sunshine, but using it in you home can make you nervous. I’m here to tell you with the right shade of yellow, painted on the right surface, you’ll wish you would have done it sooner.

Yellows I Tested

I browsed a few shades of yellow paint before deciding on the right one for our kids’ room. For this project, I only planned to paint the beds/cabinets we built. A thin-striped wallpaper had already been decided, I just needed to find the perfect paint to pair with the design. It was between Hay by Farrow & Ball, Da Vinci’s Canvas by Benjamin Moore, and Citrine by Benjamin Moore.

Hay by Farrow & Ball

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Hay was the perfect shade of yellow. It didn’t scream sunshine, but it did create such a calm and happy feeling. The kids love it, I love it— even my husband loves it! I firmly believe that this shade is the best muted, butter yellow out there. For this project, I intended to add a variety of colors to the palette. In this room you’ll find yellow being the base color and then red, blues and greens were sprinkled in. I believe all these colors worked well with each other but only because of our yellow friend Hay.

Julia Marcum created a joyful playroom for her girls by using a yellow that is bright & cheery. Kids love bright colors and this yellow is just that. She also painted the cabinetry and paired it with a fun wallpaper. Painting cabinetry in a bold color makes a statement without being overpowering. The pop of yellow is the perfect amount for this space.

California Hills by Benjamin Moore

Talk about a fun bathroom for your kids! Valeria blew social media away with this kids’ bathroom transformation she did in her home. When she revealed the room, the yellow cabinets instantly drew the eye. Not only did she paint the cabinets, she also painted the baseboards the same, cheery yellow. this room was a perfect balance of elegance and whimsical design.

Good as Gold by Clare Paint

I’ll stay here please! Alexis went for it and painted her guest bedroom a rich gold. Talk about saturation— if you want a color that really stands out, then this one is probably for you. She did a fantastic job with pattern mixing and adding rich wood tones. Everything paired nicely in this space. I wouldn’t be mad if this was my guest bedroom to stay in.

If you’re thinking about adding some color to your home, maybe start with a shade that isn’t as daring. My favorite go-to “neutral shades” are soft blues, olive greens, and chocolate browns. However, if yellow speaks to you, then take the leap! I think we can all agree, it’s a great color for a kid’s space— whether it’s for a boy or girl. Start with a small piece of furniture like a nightstand or side table and get some feelers. Unleash your creative side and start giving your home some flavor!
